The pH Meter

pH is a fundamental property of any solution, so it should therefore come as little surprise that a pH meter is an indispensable instrument for ensuring quality beer. pH is an important component of virtually ever step of the brewing process, including brewing water, mash, sparge, wort, beer and packaged product.
Generally Speaking, pH meters break down into two types - handheld and benchtop. Handheld pH meters may have either an external probe, connected via a cord, or an internal probe. Benchtop meters, as the name suggests, are less mobile but may offer increased precision, increased longevity, and greater ease in probe replacement.
As with most things, you get what you pay for in a pH meter, but with the proper storage and regular calibrations an inexpensive handheld pH meter should properly function through hundreds of batches.
