The Drying Oven

A drying oven is a standard piece of laboratory equipment that provides a uniformly heated and sealed enclosure wherein materials can become completely dry and free of moisture. Commercially available desiccators range from relatively inexpensive tabletop versions to large drying cabinets.
In the context of brewing quality control, drying ovens are used to remove traces of moisture from brewing components so the true dry weight of these materials can be accurately measured. During a typical brewing process, a drying oven should be utilized during malt processing.
Drying can be used to determine the moisture content of the malt and whether it is suitable to proceed with grinding. In addition, a moisture analysis of brewing reagent contents should be determined with a drying oven during the grainout, kettle trub, and fermenter trub steps of the brewing process.
