Tools Used in the Sampling Process

Specific tools are needed to analyze the samples taken during the sampling process. Select one of the tools below to learn more about it, including when and where it is used during the Sampling Process.

The Autoclave

The autoclave is an indispensable piece of equipment in the microbiology lab, as it ensures the sterility of equipment used for taking, preparing, and plating samples. Using heat, pressure, and steam, sterilization with the autoclave ensures no microorganisms remain on equipment that could result in misleading results or contaminated samples. While also a decontamination technique, the commonly confused method of disinfection does not ensure complete removal of microorganisms.
The most affordable autoclaves, which are essentially pressure cookers, are fortunately adequate for the brewery quality lab and can be purchased new for well under a thousand dollars. The more expensive oven-style autoclaves may have more volume and more control over the sterilization conditions, but the additional cost of these may outweigh the benefits for the growing quality lab.
