The Foam Funnel

A foam funnel is a glass piece of laboratory equipment like the type that would be commonly found in a chemistry laboratory. Generally, it is a cylindrical glass vessel fitting with a stopcock at the bottom to release liquid, and the entire apparatus is held in place using a metal stand and clamps. The foam funnel is used to conduct quality control tests that affirm the chemical stability of the beer’s foam during the process of canning and bottling the brewed product. Most consumers expect a beer’s foam to have an aesthetically and texturally pleasing consistency, and quality control can assure each batch meets a brewer’s standards. During quality control, beer is poured into the foam funnel and series of simple, timed tests are run regarding the foam’s consistency, resulting in a calculation called the Sigma Value. Foam values within a certain Sigma Value range are considered of average quality, and allowed to pass through to packaging in bottles and cans.
