Tools Used in the Sampling Process

Specific tools are needed to analyze the samples taken during the sampling process. Select one of the tools below to learn more about it, including when and where it is used during the Sampling Process.

The Seam Gauge

A seam gauge is a relatively compact machine that measures the metal gauge thickness of a can’s seam. This machine is specifically used for quality control to assure accurate, precise, and repeatable can seam thickness despite variability imposed by different operators. Modern seam gauge readings are highly accurate and reproducible, down to the level of micron resolution. During a standard brewing sampling plan, the seam gauge is used to perform a seam test during canning.
