In the course of studying karyotypes of brewing yeasts using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, we found differences in chromosomal DNA banding patterns (e.g., chromosomal length-polymorphism) among some strains from the same origins, especially in small chromosomal DNAs (chr. I, VI, and III). Southern hybridization patterns with probes FL01 (chr. I), ACT1 (chr. VI), and HIS4 (chr. III) suggested that the changes in chromosome length of these strains occurred during successive cultivation.
