Accurate varietal identification depends upon the availability of a large enough number of reliable markers to differentiate among the various varieties available. In this report we explore the use of well-characterized, mapped DNA sequences to prime polymerase chain reaction sequence amplification. Many of these markers that are being developed for use in genetics research are informative enough to be potentially useful in an industrial setting. We also provide estimates of setup costs to utilize this technology and of the throughput that could be expected of a laboratory facility managed by one worker.
