Award of Distinction

2018 Awardee

Awardees will be acknowledged during the ASBC Opening Session on August 12, 2018, at Brewing Summit 2018.

Guy Derdelinckx (1954) is professor at KULeuven (Belgium). Together with Prof. em. Hubert Verachtert and with the support of famous Belgian Specialty Beer Breweries as Trappists and Duvel Moortgat, he focused the major part of his scientific life on research about applied microbiology in the field of malting and brewing. His team was active more specifically on metabolites synthesized by microorganisms (molds, yeasts and even bacteria) that could have a negative (or sometimes a positive) influence on beer physicochemical and/or flavor properties. The major topics studied are: esterase activity in beer during storage of bottles of brands characterized by re-fermentation (Ph.D.’s by Neven and by Daenen); influence of thermal load during brewing and boiling on beer ageing by specialty beers (Ph.D.’s by De Schutter and by Vanderhaegen); and finally, his essential discovery: description of the mechanism of primary gushing provoked by Class 2 hydrophobins (Ph.D.’s by Deckers, by Shokribousjein and by Khalesi).
