About Peter Pipasts
Born in Latvia in 1924, Peter immigrated to Canada in 1953. He received his B.Sc. degree in chemistry from Sir George Williams University in Montreal in 1967 and was an associate member of the Chemical Institute of Canada.
His research chemist career started as a research assistant at the University and afterwards he worked at Delmar Chemicals before moving to London Ontario to work in the Beverage Science Department at Labatt’s Breweries of Canada. During his career, his research articles were published in various scientific journals. Peter was the recipient of the Eric Kneen Memorial Award in 1992 for the publication “The Role of Copper, Oxygen and Polyphenols in Beer Flavor Instability” with his colleagues.
He retired from Labatt’s in 1990. In retirement, Peter was an active tenor in a men’s choir, an avid skier and gardener and travelled the world with his wife of 69 years. Peter passed away peacefully in his 92nd year on November 19, 2016. To honor his memory, his family has established the Peter Pipasts Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to ASBC student members pursuing M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in areas pertinent to brewing science.
