ASBC NEWSLETTERVOLUME 67, NUMBER 4 - 2007 DOWNLOAD Newsletter as PDF File
Like that classic 1934 Ford, ASBC is also a classic, and like Larry’s refined 1934 Ford, ASBC has been refined and updated to keep up with the times. The Methods of Analysis (MOA) has moved from a hardcopy version and is now on CD-Rom; the ASBC Journal continues to be recognized around the world as one of the premier peer-reviewed brewing journals, and it too has changed with the times—all papers are now submitted and reviewed electronically; all oral presentations at ASBC conferences are done in PowerPoint, gone are the days of slides and overheads; and the ASBC interactive website is being updated constantly to give our members the latest information. The ASBC continues to be a global authority in the field of brewing science and technology; it began in 1934, continues today, and is moving into tomorrow. The world is moving at a faster pace and so is everyone who is involved in the ASBC today. The current board met September 26–27, 2007, in St. Paul, MN, to stay in front of current issues. We welcomed Fred Strachan (Sierra Nevada Brewing), Finance Committee member; Sue Kay (Miller Brewing Company), who is transitioning into the Publications Committee chair; and special guest Bob Foster, the Technical Committee’s new senior advisor. Our Program Committee is working with the World Brewing Congress Planning Committee for 2008, which is shaping up to be a world-class brewing event. In August 2007 ASBC jointly sponsored the 1st International Brewing Symposium: Hop Flavor & Aroma, held at Oregon State University in Corvallis, with the MBAA. It was a very successful event, with 160 attendees from around the globe. The ASBC Technical Committee has 16 collaborative studies in motion, and the Publications Committee is working on several projects, including the completion of Dr. Inoue’s translation of Diacetyl in Fermented Foods and Beverages in 2008. The latest update to the MOA will be released soon, and the ASBC Craft Brewers Manual will be updated and released on CD-Rom in the future. To everyone involved with ASBC, from the fantastic support at Scientific Societies to the volunteers who spend many hours pushing ASBC forward, I appreciate your time and passion. I encourage everyone to visit the ASBC website frequently to keep up with developments surrounding WBC 2008, pay close attention to the monthly ASBC News Capsules that will be hitting your e-mail for the latest information. Enjoy the holidays with family and friends—2008 is just around the corner. Stay tuned for my next column, it involves solar power and hybrids. —Michael J. Joyce In This Issue
