VOLUME 62, NUMBER 2 - 2002
Greetings! It’s been fun showing you a few sights from around Golden, CO, but sometimes winter looks the same everywhere. This picture was taken just outside the ASBC office in St. Paul! It’s hard to believe that it’s almost spring already but I’ve seen some sure signs: red robins boppin’ around, budding trees, crocus tips peaking through the snow, and a recent 8-inch snowstorm preceded by 70° temperatures during the day!
Let’s take a look at what’s going on in the Society. Brian Williams (MBAA) and I have been working with the St. Paul staff to organize the next joint meeting of the ASBC and MBAA, WBC 2004. A great site for this global meeting has been secured. The WBC 2004 is scheduled for July 25-28 at the Hyatt Regency in San Diego! Dirk Bendiak (ASBC) and Mike Sutton (MBAA) are the Technical Committee co-chairs and are responsible for planning the technical program. Dirk and Mike will organize and deliver a stunning technical program. As was done for the WBC 2000, they will reach out to our global partners during the program planning process.
Planning for the Global Beer Alliance (GBA) has continued to develop. The GBA Committee has drafted a preliminary charter and non-binding cooperative agreement. The charter and cooperative agreement are being reviewed by each of the various societies. The proposed mission is “to promote beer culture and a positive image for beer through our knowledge of brewing science and technology at a global level.” The cooperative agreement addresses subjects such as: statement of purpose, principles of governance, future governance, termination of agreement, and confirmation. Stay tuned.
Howdy Partners, yeeehah! The annual meeting in Tucson, AZ, is just around the corner. Karen DeVries and the Program Committee have put together a wonderful program for our annual meeting: 18 oral presentations, 28 posters, three workshops, five seminars, and two taste-training sessions. In addition to having superb technical presentations, Karen’s committee built a very interactive program that was inspired by our Strategic Plan. ASBC meetings continue to be successful because we provide our attendees with a variety of venues and formats in which to learn and interact with colleagues and friends. The workshops and seminars will provide excellent opportunities to interact with industry experts in areas like craft brewing, taste training, consumer issues, process decision making, environmental concerns, product safety and security, yeast vitality/viability, and flavored alcohol beverages. Also, Larry Johnson, a motivational speaker, will present “Destroy the Status Quo and Recreate the Future.” He will help us learn to lead change in the changing world. Come to Tucson and join us for the 67th annual meeting of the ASBC, June 8-12, 2002!
I would like to thank all of the members of the Board of Directors for their commitment and dedication. All of you have helped me tremendously throughout the year and have contributed to the success of our Society. Thank you. I also want to thank the members of ASBC for the privilege of serving as president. ASBC has been a big part of my personal development within the brewing industry. The Society has given me the opportunity to learn and develop many skills that have helped me grow personally and professionally. I want to encourage all members to seize these opportunities for themselves. Get involved. Involvement in ASBC in a local section or at the national level is a very rewarding experience. I understand the daily pressures and time commitments you encounter at work. At times, it seems impossible to think about adding another “to do” to your already long list—but ASBC is worth it! ASBC volunteers develop skills that directly support their professional development. They learn state-of-art technical expertise and leadership skills, develop industry contacts through global networking, receive global recognition, and improve their time-management and communication skills. Take advantage of these opportunities! If you would like to volunteer please contact me or any board member.
See you in Tucson.
Cheers,

-Rob Maruyama
President
