ASBC Newsletter VOLUME 62, Number 1 - 2002
By the time you read this newsletter, the busy holiday season will be over; the tragedies of 2001 will be behind us; and you will be back in the swing of things in a brand new year, 2002! Happy New Year! The picture I selected for this newsletter was taken on a chilly day near Winter Park, CO, where my family and I went looking for our Christmas tree.
As I write this column, it’s a beautiful Colorado winter day with just a touch of new snow. Although cold temperatures are a fact of nature during Colorado winters, I must admit that when I was watching the Fiesta Bowl, I thought about the warmer weather of summer. The game reminded me that in less than six months, we’ll be meeting in sunny Tucson for our Annual Meeting. Put that meeting on your calendar!
The Board has its next “face to face” meeting in March, but, as I mentioned in my last column, we now meet via teleconference every month. I’ll give you a bit of a look into what’s going on.
The Global Beer Alliance met on December 4, 2001. The meeting was conducted in Boulder, CO, with some members participating via phone. Due to scheduling issues, ASBC wasn’t represented. The members discussed the need to develop a mission statement, strategies, and tactics in order to bring value to the membership. The remaining 2001 budget will be used to develop a logo and for website development and general administration. Governance structure, formal intent, and member benefits were some of the remaining topics discussed. More details to come.
The events in September had a direct impact on the MBAA’s meeting plans for Guadalajara and the WBC 2004 planning process. The MBAA meeting was cancelled, and therefore some of their planning activities, including the installation of the new president and discussions of WBC 2004, had to be delayed or managed in other ways. I would like to congratulate the new incoming president of the MBAA, Kathy Kinton, on her new role. Brian Williams (MBAA WBC 2004 cochair) has been working with Kathy and the MBAA Board of Governors to identify their Technical Committee cochair. The MBAA individual selected will work closely with Dirk Bendiak (from ASBC) to develop a world-class technical conference in 2004. The St. Paul staff has been working feverishly to secure a great venue for the meeting! Brian and I will let you know when it’s official.
The Internet continues to be a critical part of our Strategic Plan. The board would like to thank Ken Berg for his contributions as Internet editor. For the past two years, Ken has helped to maintain our website efforts. Thank you, Ken. Bob Jensen will replace Ken as the new Internet editor. Welcome back, Bob. When Bob was on the board previously, he provided the focus and awareness to help develop the ASBC web presence we have today. During our last board meeting, Bob’s proposals for Internet activities were reviewed. He identified current and new website opportunities on which to focus: on-line Journal and Newsletter, posters from the annual meetings, peer review of manuscripts, emerging issues discussions, and intrasociety communications (Technical Committee, Program Committee, etc.). Bob, your knowledge and commitment are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Under the leadership of Karen DeVries, the Program Committee has continued preparing the excellent technical content for our meeting in Tucson. One of the areas of focus in our Strategic Plan is to begin the transition from a lecture-style format to a more interactively styled program. To help the Society take this new approach, Karen has been working with experts in adult learning. Members attending our annual meetings will take more information back to their jobs because we have begun to integrate adult learning skills with our Society’s key strengths: technical sessions and workshops. I’m really excited about this new approach.
It’s never too early to start thinking about our Annual Meeting. I would like to personally invite you to attend the 67th Annual Meeting of the ASBC at the great El Conquistador Resort in Tucson. The ASBC has visited this venue in the past, and each time our meeting has been a great success. See you there, June 8-12, 2002. I’ll buy you a beer!
Cheers,

-Rob Maruyama

The ASBC Nominating Committee is seeking to identify qualified Society
members to serve on the Board of Directors. Nominations for the offices of
secretary, vice-president, and president-elect are required for voting at the
2002 Annual Meeting in Tucson.
The term of office for the secretary is two years, from the close of the
2002 Annual Meeting through the close of the 2004 Annual Meeting. The term of
office for the vice-president is one year, beginning at the close of the 2002
Annual Meeting. However, because the vice-president is the principal candidate
for president-elect and subsequently succeeds to the offices of president and
past president, a commitment of four years is expected from this nominee.
Following the same progression, a commitment of three years is required of the
nominee for president-elect.
Because of the important roles these nominees will play in the future of
your Society, the Nominating Committee is seeking your help in identifying
qualified members to fill these positions. In making your suggestions, please
remember that all nominees must be active members of the Society, be willing
to serve, and have the permission and support of their employer/management.
Nominees chosen by this committee will be published in Newsletter No. 2
of 2002.
Please direct all nominations to any member of the Nominating Committee
(listed below).

Want to make a difference in a student’s life? ASBC is now collecting
donations for the Student Travel Grant Program. This program pays a portion of
students’ travel costs so that they can attend the Annual Meeting and
present a paper or poster. Ten students will be awarded grants to attend the
meeting in Tucson, AZ, this June.
The amount of the grant is determined by the amount of funds raised for the
program versus the number of eligible students. All ASBC student members,
graduate or undergraduate, who are at least 21 years of age are eligible to
apply for these awards. All interested applicants should send a written
request (up to 300 words typed) to attend the Tucson meeting, a copy of the
abstract submitted to ASBC, and verification of ASBC student membership.
Funds to support this important program are needed. These dollars are
investments for the future. Current student members are the future members and
leaders of ASBC. If you already contribute, thank you. Your support is
appreciated. If you haven’t contributed in the past, please consider
contributions for this year. The Student Travel Grant Program provides all of
us with an opportunity to get involved with developing future leaders. It may
also provide future benefits to your company. One of these students may be a
future member of your team.
Any corporation, ASBC local section, or individual who would like to
participate may forward a contribution to Linda Schmitt, ASBC, 3340
Pilot Knob Road, St. Paul, MN 55121. Checks should be made payable to the
ASBC Student Travel Fund.

Local Section 1—New YorkNo meeting was held in December. The January meeting for ASBC Local
Section 1 is in the planning stage.
Dennis Lenahan, Chairman
Local Section 2—St. Louis
The October meeting was held at the Lemp Brewery Mansion (our nationally
recognized haunted house). BOOO!!!. Chaz Benedict from Orbisphere spoke on the
topic of equipment to detect gases dissolved in liquid.
The November meeting was held at the Lodge at Grants Trail. This was a
joint meeting with the American Chemical Society. Greg Wahl spoke on chemistry
for human health.
The next meeting will be held on Jan. 30 in the Corporate Theater. A joint
event with the MBAA is being discussed for February. Upcoming March, April,
and May meetings are being planned.
Rich Ogle, President
Local Section 4—Milwaukee/Chicago
The Milwaukee/Chicago section held a joint meeting with the MBAA on Nov.
15 at the Miller Inn, Milwaukee, WI. A technical presentation about hops was
given by Jerry Hilton of S. Steiner, Inc. Its title was “History and
Crisis." After the presentation, a fine beef tenderloin dinner was
served. A family night is planned for Feb. 1 at a Milwaukee Admirals’ game.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 17 and will again be a joint
ASBC/MBAA meeting.
Eric Martens, Secretary
ASBC Local Section 7—Northwest
The Northwest ASBC section met in conjunction with the MBAA late in
October at the Downtown Portland Days Inn. Ten members were in attendance for
the business meeting and about 20 at the overall function. The group discussed
having one person from the ASBC chapter give a presentation to the group at
each meeting. We will once again have an ASBC night at the Wyeast Lab in
Hoodriver, OR, this spring.
Letters of invitation to join us will be sent to all ASBC national members
in our area. The next meeting of district Northwest will see the election of
new officers.
Dan Christopher, Chairman
Local Section 8—Wild West
Local Section 8 collaborated successfully with the MBAA to host a joint
meeting during November at the Coors Brewery in Golden, CO. Dr. Michael Lewis,
professor emeritus from the University of California at Davis, was present to
discuss the perception of freshness in the marketplace with respect to how
brewers gauge stability. The normal business agenda clearly focused upon the
strategic need of the folks present to increase the activities of the section
in the year to come.
Future events will include a meeting that is planned for mid-February at
the Rocky Mountain Microbrewer’s Symposium—a collective meeting in which
technical topics and local speakers share advice and information with the
local breweries in the Rocky Mountain Region. Please contact Katie Kunz at katiekunz@msc.com or Jim Mattoon from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, at jmatton@uccs.edu.
Other possibilities for the spring include a visit by Tim O’Rourke from the
Institute and Guild of Brewing, London, England. We will try to persuade Tim
to share his experiences and passions about cask conditioning at an organized
meeting of the section.
We hope that all of you find good fortune and happiness in the New Year!

Heissinger Retires
After 32 years of dedicated service to Anheuser-Busch, Heinrich K.
Heissinger, vice-president of brewing research and technology, announced his
retirement at the end of 2001.
Heinrich made significant contributions to Anheuser-Busch over the years.
In addition to his most recently held position, his career included
assignments as resident brewmaster at the Jacksonville Brewery and director of
brewing operations.
During his career, he was instrumental in driving quality initiatives and
furthering understanding of the art and science of brewing.
Provincial Winners of 2001 Malting Barley Quality Competition Named
Four provincial winners in the Barley Development Council’s Malting
Barley Quality Competition for 2001 were announced in November. The
competition chair, Eric Armstrong, noted that 287 entries were received in
2001, a 70% increase in entries over the 2000 competition. “This competition
emphasizes the importance that the industry—as represented by the
sponsors—places on the quality of the malting barley produced in Canada,”
she said. “Maltsters and brewers depend on the excellent quality of Canadian
malting barley for the quality of their own products.”
Sponsors for 2001 were the Canadian Wheat Board, the Brewing and Malting
Barley Research Institute, the Canadian Grain Commission, BARI-Canada, Inc.,
Cargill Ltd., Quality Assured Seeds Inc., Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, SeCan
Association, Toepfer International, SEED-EX Inc., and South West Terminal Ltd.
The Barley Development Council is an umbrella organization that includes
representatives from all aspects of the barley and malt industry in Western
Canada.
Craft-Brewing Conference and Trade Show in Cleveland
Beer, rock n’ roll, and Michael Jackson will unite in Cleveland to
celebrate the Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America on Apr. 10-13.
The 2002 Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, presented by the
Institute for Brewing Studies (IBS), will tie craft-beer flavor with Cleveland’s
growing community to make this year’s event the nation’s largest, most
important annual gathering for craft-brewing professionals.
“More than half of the breweries in the country are within driving
distance to Cleveland, making it accessible to brewers, restaurant and brewery
managers from around the nation,” says IBS director Paul Gatza.
The IBS is excited to have Michael Jackson as the keynote speaker for this
year’s conference. “The speakers’ roster is shaping up to be the finest
and most intriguing for the Craft Brewers Conference in years,” notes Gatza.
This four-day event will be in downtown Cleveland at the Renaissance Hotel,
within walking distance of Jacobs Field and the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
On Apr. 11, a welcome reception at the Great Lakes Brewing Co. will help
national and international brewers network with restaurant and brewery
managers. Briess Malting Co. is sponsoring this event. Other conference
sponsors are Cargill Malt Specialty Products Group, Steinecker Inc., S.S.
Steiner Inc., and Great Western Malting Co.
