New Active ASBC Members
Well, we're rapidly approaching springtime here in beautiful central
Illinois. The temperature has been oscillating between 35 and
55°F. There's not a snowball in sight! Thank goodness. Not
all of our members (or staff) can say that, I'm afraid, and this
topic was a major area of discussion at our most recent Board
meeting. Luckily though, there were enough central/southern U.S.
members on the Board to put down the initiative of staff to move
the Headquarters Office to Palm Springs. Not that I blame them
now . . . but I would bet money that they'd be singing a different
tune in August!
Within the pages of this Newsletter, you will find the
program for the 63rd Annual Meeting of the ASBC. Nona Mundy and
the Program Committee have once again assembled a fabulous program
for Palm Springs. The scientific and social content of the Meeting
should prove attractive to all of our membership. All the bases
are covered--barley, malt, hops, beer, and "stressed-out"
yeast (honest, would I lie to you?). Of particular interest to
attendees might be the special seminars planned for Wednesday
afternoon pertaining to sensory evaluation and malt analysis.
Participation in these seminars will be limited, so be sure to
sign up early. Please remember that this meeting is of a casual
nature, so save your formal attire for the President's Banquet
on Wednesday.
As my last Board meeting as President for the Society will be
held prior to the Annual Meeting, I would like to invite anyone
with an issue that they wish brought before the Board to do so.
The Board and the Society it represents is in place to service
the needs of the membership. Please feel free to contact any of
us on the Board should you have anything to put before the Board.
Remember, there's no mountain too high, no snow too deep . . .
.
In closing, I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity
of serving the Society this year as President and having this
column as a vehicle to highlight items of particular interest
to me. One last time though, I would like to make a plea for donations
to the Student Travel Grant Fund. Money is a bit slow coming this
year and we may have to curtail the size of the program should
things remain as they are. This program affords our members the
chance to hear about the latest in University research, while
providing the student members experience and an opportunity for
networking. Everyone wins! In any event, I look forward to seeing
all of you in Palm Springs this June!
-Bruce Sebree
President
For the first time, details of the 1997 ASBC Annual Meeting, June
21-25, in Palm Springs, CA, are available on the Internet. ASBCnet
includes a preview of the technical program, flight and ground
transportation tips, hotel and registration forms, and exhibit
information and reservation forms. Also included is a letter highlighting
guest events and the attractions and activities in Palm Springs
and surrounding area.
To use the hotel, registration, and exhibit forms, simply print
out the forms and complete. The forms can then be mailed or faxed
to the designated address or fax number. Be sure to register by
May 23 to receive the advance registration rate. Hotel reservation
forms are due May 21.

Local Section 8-Wild West
The fourth meeting of ASBC Local Section 8 "Wild West"
was held at the Columbine Mill Brewery, Littleton, CO, on February
4, 1997. Twenty-six attendees gathered for delectable pizza and
beer from the Columbine Brewery, with the socializing from 6-7
PM, paying $10 each at the door. The business meeting was called
to order by ASBC Local Chairman Ryan Mytar at 7 PM. Ryan welcomed
everyone to the first meeting of ASBC Local Section 8 for 1997
and reviewed the agenda.
Ryan informed the group that this would be the last meeting our
vice-chairman, Cory O'Neel, would be attending, as Cory had accepted
a position with a company with overseas brewing interests in Hong
Kong, China. The group wished Cory all the best, thanked him for
his contribution to the ASBC "Wild West" local section.
Secretary, Mike Joyce read the minutes from the first meeting
held at the Coors Brewing Company on October 28, 1996. The minutes
were approved as read.
Treasurer, Laurie Kowalsky was unable to attend due to a prior
commitment. Ryan read the treasurer report and informed the group,
that starting with this meeting, one-half of the attendance fee
would be going to the local section to establish a positive cash
balance.
Ryan introduced our invited guest speaker, Gus Guzinski from Kalsec
Inc., who gave an excellent presentation on "Hops and Hop
Utilization".
The meeting concluded with thanking our hosts, Sean Halloran and
Dave Eidenmeuller from the Columbine Brewery and distributing
door prizes. Ryan informed the group that the next local section
meeting will be scheduled the last week of April or first week
of May, at a yet to be determined site.

February 7 and 8, 1997
The ASBC Board of Directors met Feb. 7-8, 1997, in Palm Springs,
CA. The meeting was called to order by Bruce Sebree. After the
reading of the previous minutes, Sebree reported on his activities.
The Cooperative Agreement between the ASBC and MBAA covering the
WBC 2000 Meeting was signed by all parties at the MBAA convention
in Montreal. At the same meeting, discussions were held with the
EBC representative concerning a cooperative agreement they had
sent earlier for our two organizations. Initial discussion was
also held concerning a cooperative agreement between the ASBC
and BCOJ.
President-elect Dave Thomas reported that he will be giving a
presentation on ASBC Laboratory Methods for Craft Brewers
for the National Craft-Brewers Conference and Trade Show March
23-26, 1997, in Seattle, WA. The ASBC will have a survey at the
trade show to get input on the handbook, which is coming together
nicely, with editing currently in progress.
Vice-president David Hysert reported that three ASBC short courses
are being planned for 1997: On-Line Process Monitoring for May,
Hop Technology for September, and Barley Malt Quality Evaluation
for October. A course covering all aspects of Pasteurization is
being considered for November.
Past-president Rob McCaig discussed the proposed changes for the
bylaws regarding local section membership. The revised bylaws
will be published in the Spring issue of the Newsletter and voted
on at the Business Meeting in Palm Springs.
Treasurer Bob Jensen reported that the financial condition of
the Society continues to improve as measured by an increasing
membership equity. Growing membership, strong Methods of Analysis
sales and good response to short courses have all contributed
to our recent success. An investment policy for the Society's
operating reserves was outlined by the Finance Committee and approved
by the Board.
Rena Crumplen reported that the Technical Committee met prior
to the Board meeting on Feb. 5 and 6. The Technical Committee
has obtained agreement from our sister organizations to designate
the ASBC Subcommittee on CLEN Media for the Detection of Wild
Yeast as the first International Collaborative Method (ICM). If
recommended for inclusion in Methods of Analysis, the method
will be jointly adopted by EBC, BCOJ, and IoB. Permission was
requested by the BCOJ to select microbiology methods from Methods
of Analysis, translate into Japanese, and publish as Methods
of BCOJ. The Board agreed to proceed with this request. The
St. Paul office has assumed its expanded role of administering
the check services and the change-over is proceeding as planned.
Publications committee chairman Rob Maruyama reported that Margaret
Morrison will replace Lydia Marinelli as the Editor of the Methods
of Analysis and Karen DeVries will replace Jenette Wheeler
as Editor of the Newsletter. Information on the ASBCnet
is rapidly expanding with full text Journal articles being considered
in the near future. Program Committee Chairman Nona Mundy summarized
plans for the upcoming meeting in Palm Springs. The Board approved
the Nominating Committees candidate for vice president and Bob
Jensen agreed to continue on as treasurer. Two new ASBC logos
have been designed and will be voted on by the membership. Ballots
will be available in the Spring Newsletter and at the Annual
Meeting.
The Board reviewed Jim Munroe's report on the WBC 2000. The meeting
will be held in Orlando, FL, in mid-June of 2000. A logo for the
Congress has been approved by the Joint Planning Committee.
Considerable discussion was held regarding Strategic Planning.
Much of the discussion centered on findings from the Membership
Survey, to which 42% of the membership responded. The Board reviewed
areas that are currently being worked on and identified areas
to look at in the future.
President Bruce Sebree announced that the next Board meeting will
be held June 21, 1997 in Palm Springs, CA. The meeting was adjourned.
Suzanne Y. Thompson
Secretary
The ASBC Nominating Committee announces the following slate of
officers for membership approval at the 1997 Annual Meeting: David
W. Hysert for president-elect, David Ryder for vice-president,
and Robert Jensen for treasurer.
President-Elect
David W. Hysert received his Ph.D. degree from the University
of Toronto in bioorganic chemistry in 1971. After two years of
postdoctoral research, he joined Molson Breweries, where he held
various positions in an 18-year career in research and quality
control, including director, technical services, from 1981 to
1985 and vice president, research and quality assurance, from
1985 to 1992. In 1992, he joined John I. Haas, Inc. in Yakima,
WA, as vice president, technical director, his current position.
Hysert is a member of many professional societies besides ASBC,
such as the IoB and MBAA. He was president of the Hop Research
Council in 1992 and 1993. He has served the ASBC in several capacities
including member of the Editorial Committee (1981-1982), member
of the technical committee (1982-1984), and chair of the International
Methods subcommittee (1984-1992). He has served the ASBC Board
of Directors as chair of the Publications Committee since 1994.
Vice-President
David S. Ryder is vice president-brewing, research and quality
assurance for the Miller Brewing Company. He acquired his Ph.D.
in biochemistry from the University of Brussels, Belgium. He also
holds academic qualifications from the IoB and the Royal Society
in London. Ryder began his brewing career in England at Associated
British Maltsters. Prior to joining Miller Brewing Company, he
was with the South African Breweries Beer Division, and was named
director of research and development at the Delta Corporation,
Ltd. He served with the Artois Breweries in Belgium as an international
technical consultant. He was also with J.E. Siebel Sons' Co.,
Inc. as vice-president, technical services, and director of education
for the Siebel Institute of Technology. Ryder is past chairman
of the ASBC program committee (1988-1992) and publications committee
(1992-1994). He is also a fellow of the IoB and a member of the
MBAA and EBC, where he currently chairs a subgroup for studying
new fermentation systems.
Treasurer
As a Mensing Scholar, Robert Jensen worked for Minnesota Malting
Company during his college years, and upon receiving his degrees,
accepted a job as research director for the company. Bob graduated
from the University of Minnesota in 1977 with B.S. degrees in
biochemistry and microbiology. He continued his education through
the University's food science extension program. He has worked
for Minnesota Malting Company for 20 years. Recently, he was promoted
to the position of vice-president of Quality and Operations. His
job responsibilities include corporate quality control, production
management, research and development, and information systems.
Bob has been active in ASBC, serving as president of the North
Central Section, as a member of the Technical Committee, and as
Chairman of the New and Alternative Methods Subcommittee. He has
been Minnesota Malting Company's technical representative to AMBA
for the past 10 years.
The membership will be voting during the Business Meeting at Palm
Springs on bylaw changes to facilitate the formation of a Student
Division. All members in attendence are urged to participate in
the voting on the proposed changes presented here.
ARTICLE 14
LOCAL/STUDENT SECTIONS
14.1 Chartering and Organization. Local organizations or
groups of brewing chemists containing Active Members, upon application
to the President of the Society and subsequent approval by the
Board of Directors, may be established as a Local or Student Section
of the Society. After approval by the Board of Directors, the
President shall notify the new Section and shall arrange for transmittal
of a suitably inscribed certificate bearing the signatures of
the President and the Secretary of the Society. The certificate
shall conform with a pattern approved by the Board of Directors.
All Local/Student Sections of the Society shall be subject to
the following provisions:
(01) Membership. A proportion of the Local/Student Section shall
be Active, Student, Retired, or Honorary Life Members of the Society.
The remainder of the membership may be comprised of authorized
representatives of Corporate Members of the Society or persons
employed in or connected with the brewing and related industries
who are not members of the Society but are willing to pay Local/Student
dues (if required) and attend meetings.
(02) Officers. The responsibilities of the officers of the Local/Student
Sections shall be similar to those of the officers of the Society.
At least one (1) officer shall be an Active Member of the Society.
An officer of the Local/Student Section or a properly designated
alternative Active Member should represent the Local/Student Section
at the Local/Student Section Representatives Meeting held during
the Annual Meeting of the Society. The results of Local/Student
Section elections shall be communicated promptly to the Society's
Secretary and President.
(03) Dues and Assessments. Local/Student Sections shall have the
power to levy dues upon their members. Such dues shall not exceed
fifty (50) percent of the dues for an Active Member (National).
Special assessment of the membership, not to exceed one year's
dues, may be levied with the majority approval of the Local/Student
membership. Except as specifically authorized by the Board of
Directors of the Society, the Society shall not be liable in any
way for the obligations of any Local/Student Section.
(04) Bylaws. Local/Student Section bylaws shall be in accordance
with the Bylaws of the Society. Any exceptions that may arise
must be approved by the Board of Directors of the Society. No
Local/Student Section may seek a corporate charter outside of
the Society.
(05) Privileges of the Members. All members of the Local/Student
Sections shall be eligible to serve on Local/Student Section committees
and shall be entitled to vote on all Local/Student Section matters,
including election of Local/Student Section officers. Local/Student
Members shall have the privilege of attending the Annual Meeting
of the Society, but shall have no vote.
(6) Annual Report. A yearly report for each Local/Student Section
is to be sent to the Board of Directors of the Society. This report
is to include a list of all members by classes, financial report
(if appropriate), committee members, and a brief summary of meetings
and activities.
14.2 Withdrawal of Charter. The President together with
the Board of Directors of the Society may withdraw certificates
issued for failure to comply with constitutional provisions or
other just cause. Such action shall not be taken until after a
hearing with Local/Student Section representatives.
14.3 Dissolution of Local/Student Sections and Distribution
of Assets. The members of the Local/Student Sections shall
adopt a resolution recommending dissolution of the Local/Student
upon two thirds (2/3) vote of the Local/Student Section members
favoring the adoption of the resolution. In the event of dissolution
of a Local/Student Section and the discharge of its' debts and
settlement of its' affairs, any funds and property of the Local/Student
Section remaining thereafter shall be conveyed to the Society
for its' general purposes or, with the consent of the Board of
Directors of the Society, shall be conveyed to another qualified
nonprofit organization or organizations dedicated to the perpetuation
of objectives similar to those of the Society provided that such
selected organization or organizations at the time of the Local/Student
Section's dissolution shall be exempt under Section 501(c)(3)
of the Internal Revenue Code, as amended, or under such successor
provisions of the Code as may be in effect at the time of the
Local/Student Section's dissolution. The Local/Student Section
Members shall adopt a plan of distribution and directing the submission
thereof by a favorable vote of two-thirds (2/3) of the members.
